… Continue Reading

SpeakApps EDL’12 celebration in 3 minutes

On 26 September SpeakApps organized an event to celebrate the European Day of Languages 2012. Our guest speaker was David Singleton, professor of Applied Linguistics at Trinity College, and his lecture was offered via streaming (shortly we will be offering it online too). The event continued with the experiences from teachers that have already used the SpeakApps tools and hands-on workshops to show how these tools work and what are they useful for.

You will get an idea of how the event went by having a look at the short video below.

Towards sustainable pedagogical development

Society has undergone many changes in recent years, but according to Jacobs1 education has not been able to keep up. She posits that students feel like time travelling when entering schools, as schools have become distant from the world outside them. One of the reasons for this is probably that not many educational institutions have built a sustainable infrastructure for pedagogical development.

Another problematic issue is that new tools can be taken into use without any reconsideration of pedagogical practices. In this case, the potential of the tools may not be realized, and … Continue Reading

Personal and shared spaces of language learning

poster_SA_PlThe term open is somehow finding its way into educational contexts. In 2006, Lankshear and Knobel introduced two mindsets and stated that according to mindset 2, which is typical for the contemporary knowledge society, a space is perceived as open, continuous and fluid. Thus, the emergence of digital technologies and changing mindsets are also challenging language educators to rethink how to design for learning in an open world.

Openness was also a focal theme of the Eurocall CMC & Teacher Education SIGs Annual Workshop, held this year in Bologna, Italy. As part of … Continue Reading

Eurocall and the benefits of sharing in education

bolognaOn March 29th, the University of Bologna (Italy) will welcome the participants of a new edition of the Eurocall CMC & Teacher Education SIGs Annual Workshop. Taking into account the open nature of SpeakApps, a few project members from UOC, RUG and JYU will be participating in this event by presenting the paper The SpeakApps Teacher Training Programme: a meta-design … Continue Reading
